In 1903 book entitled The Souls of Black Folk: Essays and Sketches, American historian, sociologist and civil rights activist W.E.B. DuBois posed a simple but powerful question to the world: “Would America have been America without her Negro people?”

More than a century later, this thought-provoking query serves as the inspiration for “America I AM: The African American Imprint,” a four-year traveling exhibit that examines the imprint of African-Americans on the development of the United States since the 1600s.
